Cummins Races!
The Cedar County Raceway has been hosting the
Dennis Cummins Races since Dennis's death in 1999. Dennis was a
big supporter of the races with his wife Kathy. Dennis ran the
races here in Cedar County for a number of years as well as raced in
them. When Dennis passed away his family and friends decided to
continue something Dennis loved, thus the Dennis Cummins races, held
every year during the Cedar County Fair. It has been well received
and supported throughout these years.
Eric Eickhoff has been running the races
since 2005 when Nick Opfer, who had been running them since Dennis's
death, handed the reins over. Eric had been a local racecar driver on a
regular basis in the years prior and had known Dennis well and Dave even
better, so naturally Eric jumped at the opportunity to manage the
track. He has had a lot of success with the track these last couple of
years as well as the 4 - cylinder feature that he brought to the area in
2005. Eric says "the four cylinder is something for the locals - it's
something that doesn't require a lot of work or money and anyone can get
involved. Everyone loves to cheer on the LOCAL favorites because they
know them, it's someone's brother or dad, even an uncle out there
racing." To everyone's surprise the 4 cylinder races have really caught
on. Of course the Hobby and Street stock are racing and the fast,
favorite Grand Nationals. The races continue to grow with the support
of the community and fair board as well as the car drivers from the
surrounding area that come up and support Hartington, without them the
races could not be what they have become.
When Dave Cummins passed away last June, it was only right to dedicate these races to him along with his dad. Dave was a large part in the races, whether it was racing or helping out to get the track into shape for the big day. It was something Dennis and Dave both enjoyed and loved, therefore the Cummins Races were born.
The races require a lot of work from a
lot a local individuals. To get the track up to shape for the Sunday
evening races at the end of July, beginning of August - track work
begins in June with the County doing the major dirt work, and then the
track requires constant watering and packing. As it gets closer to race
day - mowing and painting begins as well as lining up flagmen, tech
guys, MCs, and lap counters. Eric has been very fortunate to have the
wonderful help each year from passed racers, race fans and his wife. If
you are interested in helping or racing this year, see the contact
information on this page. Eric and Jana can only hope that the races
continue to grow along with the memories of Dennis and Dave.
